Description
More than three months after an unprecedented movement of popular protests erupted in Syria posing the most serious threat to his 11-year rule, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appears to be more determined than ever to cling to power, showing no signs of heeding calls by anti-regime protesters at home and the exiled opposition to step down. Assad has also ignored repeated demands by the United Nations, the United States, and other Western countries to halt his government's brutal crackdown on protesters who are increasingly becoming more defiant, replacing their demands for democratic reforms with calls for the Syrian president's ouster. The Syrian government's excessive use of force against the protesters has failed to quell the popular uprising against the regime. Instead, it seems to have solidified the protesters' resolve to forge ahead with their change movement. Moreover, the violent crackdown on the protesters has evoked world condemnation of the Assad regime with rising calls for UN Security Council action against Syria in order to force it to halt its military campaign against a people seeking freedom and democracy after decades of repression. Even Assad's latest offer to accelerate reforms has been dismissed by the protesters, the United Nations, and the United States as insufficient, raising questions about his credibility to bring about a radical change that would put an end to the unrest.
